Having grown and developed within Jan McDermott Chartered Accountants since 2011, Carl brings a high-quality approach to their work, alongside a genuine passion for building long-term client relationships across a wide range of sectors.

What’s your role at Jan McDermott, and when did you join the team?

I’m a Client Manager, and I joined the team in August 2011.

What inspired you to work in this field or join Jan McDermott Chartered Accountants?

I was always strong in maths at school and felt accountancy would be a good fit. I went on to complete an AAT apprenticeship and was offered a role by Jan. I’ve been here ever since, building my career and experience within the firm.

What kind of clients do you usually work with?

I work with a wide variety of clients across many sectors, including video game publishing, healthcare, and property and development. The diversity keeps the role interesting and allows me to develop experience across different industries.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I really enjoy the day‑to‑day interactions with my clients—supporting them, solving problems, and ultimately helping them save as much tax as possible. Building long‑term relationships is a big part of what makes the job rewarding.

Is there a particular area of your work you find especially rewarding or interesting?

I find it especially rewarding to work collaboratively with clients and our internal team. When we work together effectively, we’re able to deliver a high level of service and make a real difference to our clients’ businesses.

How do you like to start your day at work?

I start by checking my emails to see if any urgent client matters have come in. I like to respond quickly so clients know they’re supported and can rely on timely advice.

What motivates you to do your best work?

I’m naturally meticulous and take pride in producing accurate, high‑quality work. My motivation comes from the satisfaction of completing every task to a high standard and knowing clients can trust the results.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work

I’ve got a season ticket for Liverpool, so I fully experience the weekly highs and lows that come with supporting the club. I’ve also taken up golf in recent years and play whenever I can—although winter weather usually limits that!

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?

I have a real love for nature—from stargazing to countryside walks to observing wildlife in its natural habitat. In July 2025, I went on safari in the Maasai Mara, Kenya, and witnessed the great wildebeest migration. Seeing around 1.5 million wildebeest, alongside zebras and gazelles, on one of the world’s most extraordinary natural spectacles was an unforgettable experience.
